Uu i N I HE HEMORRHAGIC tendency which develops in uremia is a well recognized clinical entity but the pathogenesis of this complication is not understood.’ In the past defective blood coagulation2 as well as increased vascular fragility3 have been suggested. The possibility of a functional blood platelet abnormality was first noted by Lewis, Ferguson and Zucker2 and recently Cahalane, Johnson, Monto and Caldwell4 reported defective blood thromboplastin formation, attributing this to a decrease in platelet factor 3 activity. In addition they found that plasma from uremic subjects reduced the platelet factor 3 activity of normal platelets. Prompted by these reports, a study was undertaken to investigate the possibility of a qualitative defect in the platelets or platelet phosphatides of uremic patients.

Abnormalities of cytoplasmic Ca2+ in platelets from patients with uremia.

Uremic patients have a hemorrhagic tendency, often associated with prolonged bleeding times and decreased platelet function in vitro. Whether these defects result from abnormalities in plasma factors affecting platelet activity, platelet surface receptors, intracellular platelet mediators, or other aspects of platelet behavior is unknown. To examine the possibility that the abnormality in plate...

Microparticle Formation and Platelet Shrinkage in Type-I Glanzmman Thrombasthenia Platelets

Background: Activated normal platelets undergo many biochemical and morphological changes, some of which are apoptotic. Platelet derived microparticles and shrinked platelets as hallmark of platelet activation and apoptosis disperse surfaces containing procoagulant activity around injured vessels and tissues. This study was conducted to determine microparticles formation and platelet shrinkage ...
